Avoiding credit card overload increases your opportunities to save and invest for important goals. Credit was once defined as "Man's Confidence in Man." But in fact, the definition of credit today is more like "Man's Confidence in Himself." Using credit today means you have confidence in your future ability to pay that debt. Forty years ago, your parents may have paid cash for their homes and their cars, a largely unheard-of event today. If they borrowed money at all, chances are it was from a relative or friend, and not a financial institution.

According to this article almost 10% of American families do not have checking account in a financial institution. Since most places will not allow you to pay a bill using cash, a prepaid debit card is an alternative to having a checking account. If you have had a bad experience with a bank because they have charged you with a huge amount of overdraft fees this might be an option for you. However, there are some cons to this practice; one being that most of those cards do not offer identity theft protection.
